What is Public Aid Braces?

Orthodontic Coverage for Braces and Invisalign®

We have multiple, convenient locations throughout the state of Illinois. Our highly trained orthodontists accept public aid patients including All Kids, KidCare, Medicaid, and Medical Card. This is an Illinois state dental insurance program for orthodontic treatment including both braces and Invisalign® Clear Aligners. If you have All Kids or public aid dental insurance, your child’s orthodontic treatment (i.e., braces or Invisalign® Clear Aligners) might be covered. However, not all patients covered by All kids or Medicaid will qualify for braces. Your child must be pre-approved by the state for braces before an orthodontist can start treatment. Please read below for full details about orthodontic coverage by Public Aid in the state of Illinois, or call one of our orthodontic offices to schedule a free consultation.

All Kids Orthodontic Insurance

Medicaid is a form of government-funded health care coverage available to low-income families and individuals residing in Illinois. Illinois has two Medicaid programs specifically for children, All Kids and Family Care.

All Kids insurance provides health care to children of low-income families, while Family Care provides coverage for children and their parents. Each of these programs includes dental care for kids and might assists in paying for orthodontic treatment (braces, Invisalign, surgical orthodontics). The dental program is administered by DentaQuest of Illinois.

Who can qualify for Public Aid Braces?

Low income families living in Illinois can qualify for orthodontic coverage under various state insurance programs.

Illinois Medicaid (i.e, All Kids, Medical Card) administrators must pre-approve all patients for braces before an orthodontist can start treatment. Children with moderate to severe orthodontic problems can qualify for orthodontic treatment. Orthodontists use a special index to indicate the severity of a patient’s need for orthodontic treatment such as braces. However, children under the age of 20 qualify to be considered for coverage when getting braces. Even though all patients may not qualify for orthodontic treatment, we encourage patients to apply for treatment.

Orthodontic Treatments Covered by Public Aid

Generally, only comprehensive (Phase II) orthodontic treatment (braces) can be covered by All Kids insurance. Early or interceptive treatment such as growth modification, palatal (upper jaw) expansion, and multiple other fixed and/or removable orthodontic appliances are not covered by Public Aid. Therefore, your child must have all permanent teeth to be considered for All kids orthodontic coverage. If your child requires early (interceptive) treatment or a fixed or removable orthodontic appliance other than braces, you will be responsible for the cost of treatment. If your son or daughter still requires braces after interceptive treatment, the pre-approval can be submitted to Medicaid administrators (DentaQuest) once all the primary (baby) teeth have been lost.
